Return of spontaneous circulation

Mitigation Journal experiences ROSC

Return of spontaneous circulation or ROSC is a term used in medicine to describe a condition where a person's heart starts beating again - on its own - usually following some catastrophic medical or traumatic event. Ask any paramedic or emergency department nurse - they'll tell you that ROSC is a very, very rare event.

Today, we're happy to report that Mitigation Journal has had such an event. Let me tell you a little about what's going on.

Mitigation Journal started as an independent project way back in 2005. From a simple blog grew an online following in the first year of blogging. By 2006 a podcast (Mitigation Journal, the All Hazards Podcast) launched and, like the blog, grew a sizable listenership. By 2007 our readers and listeners numbered more than 165,000. Modest by today's standards, this was a time when podcasting was going through the teenage years with Google Blogger, today considered the grandpappy of blogging platforms was top-notch. In those early years, bloggers and podcasters managed their RSS feeds - iTunes didn't do it for you just yet.

Ten years later, in 2015, we slowed down our publishing in Mitigation Journal. We explored blogging platforms other than Blogger, went back to school, got new full-time jobs, and had a new baby or two. I even retired in 2009 but kept up writing. The good news is our content continued to be picked up and cited. I was honored to be invited to speak at several emergency management conferences and asked to write for other sources. Suddenly, Mitigation Journal fell by the wayside. It gathered cobwebs in some corner of the blogosphere.

Until recently, when an unexpected email hit my inbox. The title was  "advertise on Mitigation Journal." I was shocked. Who was reading MJ after all these years? How could there possibly be enough readership interest this many years out? How did anyone find MJ published on Blogger (considered an outdated blogging platform now)?

These are questions I can't answer now. Looking at the statistics tells me there is indeed a readership. Posts to Mitigation Journal made way back in our early days of blogging are among the most popular today.

Mitigation Journal has experienced an organic return of spontaneous circulation.

Although my professional writing life has moved in a few new directions, I am feeling that pull - ROSC of my own - to begin writing this niche and publishing Mitigation Journal once again.

And so, here we go. Mitigation Journal is live with blogging again. You can expect a new article every week. Well, take on a variety of topics within the domestic preparedness niche. The traditional and non-traditional content (along with editorials) will be covered.

Over the next few days, MJ content will undergo an overhaul process. We'll check to ensure existing content is factual and relevant to today's preparedness environment.

We thank you for your support of Mitigation Journal. There is much more to come as we provide unique perspectives on disaster and emergency management.
